There has been lots of buzzes recently regarding the use of CBD oil for fibromyalgia pain relief and treating several other medical conditions such as nausea, loss of appetite and even memory loss.
Although marijuana is illegal in most of the countries, there has been new research coming up which shows the tremendous medical pain relief potential of marijuana for patients.
In 2016, German parliament has passed a resolution which make the marijuana legal for severely ill people and the prescription of cannabis products to be covered by the patient's health insurance.
If you want to know if using a Cannabis products can help you relieve your fibromyalgia conditions, then keep reading as I am going to cover this topic in depth.
What is CBD Oil?
Cannabidiol or CBD is found in the cannabis plant such as marijuana or hemp. Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is derived from the seed of cannabis (hemp) plants.
Cannabis plants have more than 85 different cannabinoids and is the second most common constituent after tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
In plain terms, the THC is the chemical which causes people to feel high or euphoric where as CBD won’t get you high.
The level of CBD and THC varies in different plants and many marijuana grown for medical purposes contain more CBD than THC.
It is the presence of THC which causes many people to look down on cannabis but recent focus of CBD in cannabis is shifting the perception of cannabis to be used for the medical purposes.
There are several ongoing research conducted to grow cannabis plants that have high levels of CBD and almost negligible trace amount of THC.
Difference between CBD and THC
As per research published in Current Drug Safety, CBD is non-psychoactive which means it does not interfere with several psychomotor and psychological functions.
The CBD is also safe to take as studies have found that CBD took at even high dose it did not have any adverse effect on the body.
Both THC and CBD found to be reactive to the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). Two primary endocannabinoid receptors have been identified as CB1 and CB2.
These receptors are found to regulate various body functions such as appetite, immune systems and pain management. By acting directly on these receptors, the CBD found to be effective in controlling the pain.
A study published in Neuro Endocrinol Letter, suggests that Clinical endocannabinoid deficiency (CECD) in the body could be the possible reason of people having a migraine, fibromyalgia, and irritable bowel syndrome.
Cannabinoids such as CBD have demonstrated that it has dopamine-blocking and anti-inflammatory effects.
The ability of Cannabinoids to block spinal, peripheral and gastrointestinal mechanisms that promote pain in a headache, fibromyalgia and related disorders can be a very effective medicine in providing relief to millions of people in the world.
Difference between CBD Oil from Medical Marijuana and CBD Oil from Industrial Hemp
CBD can be derived either from medical marijuana or through industrial hemp plants. The main difference is the additional components in each plant.
The two main constituents of cannabis are THC and CBD. In medical marijuana, it can contain any level of THC whereas in Industrial hemp the level of THC is at a negligible level.
The actual chemical compound of CBD is same on both medical marijuana and industrial hemp.
If there is any change in the chemical compound of CBD, then it will not be a CBD. The CBD chemical structure remains the same regardless of which plant produces it.
CBD Medical Marijuana Vs. Industrial Hemp CBD Oil
The main difference between the CBD oil from medical marijuana vs. the CBD oil from industrial hemp comes from the extraction process of the oil.
Let's talk about the difference between the Hemp and marijuana plants.
The main difference between the medical cannabis and hemp is mainly due to their genetic percentage and the environment they are cultivated. The two species of cannabis are known as Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa.
The difference in the genetic percentage in the cannabis plant produces the different level of THC amount. Hemp plant produces more CBD than THC, whereas marijuana plant produces more THC than CBD.
The CBD acts to reduce the psychoactive effects of THC which is why people who take CBD does not get high.
The growing condition of Medical Marijuana and Hemp plant are also different. Medical Cannabis are selectively bred in an optimized condition which produces female flowering plants that yield budding flowers at the blooming stage of their life cycle.
In contrast, the hemp plants do not produce budding flowers but produce fiber strains which are also used for clothing, construction, oil and topical ointments products.
These days to make marijuana more potent, many growers carefully optimize the light, temperature, humidity, and CO2 and oxygen levels. This is why many producers are growing marijuana plants indoor whereas hemp is grown outdoors to maximize its size and yields.
As we now know that CBD can be obtained through both marijuana and hemp plants. The quality of CBD oil depends on the percentage of CBD oil dissolves in various other substances.
The main difference between the CBD oil from medical marijuana to CBD oil from hemp oil is the maximum amount of THC present in the solution.
The high level of THC in marijuana makes it illegal in several countries. Some states have set the maximum THC content percentage (typically 0.3 percent), and any higher level of THC is classified as marijuana.
Typically CBD oil from medical marijuana contains high level of THC which makes it schedule 1 drugs and is not legal in many states in US and countries worldwide.
On the other hand, CBD oil from hemp has very small amount of THC present which makes it allowed to be sold in open market.
Besides the different THC level, CBD oil will also have a different amount of other cannabinoids, but they are in very minute amount and does not have as many strong effects as CBD or THC are.
There are several varieties of CBD oil available in the market. The main difference is based on whether the oil contain only CBD or have a ratio of CBD to THC.
As per Chris Kilham of Medicine Hunter, the most popular ratio between THC and CBD are in 1:1 ratio but many people prefer to have minimal THC in CBD oil.
You can order or buy many hemp CBD oil either through online or your local store but you have to make sure that you are buying it from trusted source and the amount of CBD is present as advertised in the product.
Medical Benefits of CBD
There have been numerous studies which showed the CBD to be beneficial in treating several types of ailments and addictions. Some of the standard benefits of CBD are below:
Relieving pain is the most cited benefit of CBD and sometimes the presence of CBD and THC in the CBD oil is attributed to this pain relieving benefit.
2012 study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine showed that CBD administration can “significantly suppress chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain.
This is specially useful for fibromyalgia patients who suffer from chronic pain and have to rely on pain killers of strong prescription drugs .
A study published in Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD behaves as highly active hemostatic and anti-inflammatory agents and inhibits the lipid synthesis which causes the acne.
In an article published in Journal of Neuropharmacology, the study conducted on mice found that CBD lowers the incidence of diabetes in young non-obese diabetes-prone mice.
Mice not treated with CBD showed over 86% of diabetes whereas only 32% of mice treated with CBD showed diabetes. The CBD did not affect the glucose level in the mouse, but it did demonstrate the level of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-12 significantly reduced, whereas the level of anti-inflammatory IL-10 increased.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
CBD produces anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory effects which calm down the firing nerves.
Patients who have PTSD get triggered by anxiety and stress which is often eased by the use of cannabidiol.
In a study, the CBD tested on 88 patients with schizophrenia, who has failed to respond to anti-psychotic medication. It was found that to have a better effect in the patients treated with CBD compared to conventional treatment.
It is worth mentioning that it was deemed safe to take CBD and no serious side effects found.
Although there has been no formal conclusive evidence of the effect of CBD on epilepsy, the research is still in progress and based on many individual reports with people suffering from epilepsy have shown a significant reduction in the seizure rate and have a long lasting decrease.
CBD oil not only contain CBD but also number of other essential nutrients such as vitamin E and C which helps keep skin look tight and youthful. Extra nutrients such as vitamin A and D repair dry and damaged skin with powerful antioxidant properties to protect your skin from free radicals.
Can Use of CBD Treat Fibromyalgia: Even better than prescription drugs?
Fibromyalgia is a devastating disease, and it affects over 6 million people in North America. People suffering from fibromyalgia complain about having pain the muscles or find themselves hard to do daily activities due to exhaustion or fatigues.
There can be several reasons to have fibromyalgia, but the general idea is the indiscriminate firing of neurons in your central nervous system. Now if CBD or any medicine to be effective in providing relief from fibromyalgia, it has to be stabilizing this imbalance in the central nervous system.
In 2014, the National Pain Foundation conducted a survey of over 1,300 patients and found that over 30% of people have used medical cannabis.
People Who Used Medical Marijuana: CBD Oil
Overwhelming 62% of people who tried CBD says that it helped them to ease their pain, and small 5% of people said it did not help. Based on the survey results it is clear that there is certainly benefit of using CBD treating pain and fatigue symptoms for people suffering with fibromyalgia.
Contrast these results to FDA-approved medications: Lyrica, Cymbalta, Savella
People Who Used FDA approved medication
That is another reason that big pharmas does not want cannabis to be legalized or further research to be conducted.
However, it has been found that CBD has no adverse side effects on the body compared to the FDA-approved medications such as Cymbalta, Lyrica, or Savella, a more research is required to understand the benefits of CBD.
A study of use of cannabis in 28 patients of fibromyalgia and 28 non-users found that after 2 hours of consumption either through smoking, orally or combined produced a significant reduction in the pain and stiffness among the cannabis user as compared to non-users.
The benefit of using cannabis, particularly the one with high CBD, was significant in relieving pain in fibromyalgia patients.
However, another research conducted by Walitt B, on 72 patients with fibromyalgia have found no conclusive high quality evidence that Cannabinoids have significant affect in treating fibromyalgia conditions.
Despite the above research which showed cannabinoids to be not very effective in fibromyalgia patients, there has been several studies which showed that cannabinoids can be helpful in fibromyalgia patients.
Types of CBD Oil
The CBD can be taken through multiple ways. CBD comes in oil form, and also comes as capsule and gum.
Typically there are two varieties of CBD oil.
- CBD extracted from Marijuana Strains;
- CBD from industrial grade hemp
The CBD oil derived from marijuana strains can only be purchased from regulated dispensaries where marijuana is legalized. Since it is coming from regulated dispensaries, the safety and reliability of the product are more trustworthy. Many dispensaries will even mark the amount of CBD in the product.
The main issue getting CBD from marijuana strains is that it is expensive and you can not purchase it if your place has not legalized marijuana. Even ordering it online can be difficult as many regulated dispensaries will only ship to places which have legalized marijuana and not typically ship it internationally.
CBD from industrial grade hemp is sold primarily online and is not regulated. It can be ordered online, and usually, most of the sellers will ship it to the international market. It is easy and convenient to purchase industrial grade hemp, but there is some caution required when buying the industrial hemp due to the following reasons:
- Industrial hemp contains far less CBD than one extracted from marijuana. It means a larger quantity of hemp is required to obtain small amount of CBD.
- Hemp is a “bio-accumulator” which means the plant naturally draws toxins from the soil. It becomes necessary to know the source of hemp as it could be coming from the place where a high level of chemicals or pesticides used for growing hemp which could have a significant presence of toxins in the oil.
- You need to know the right source of your CBD oil supplier as many health agencies have found that several CBD oil product did not contain CBD at all.
Following is the type of CBD oils available on the market:
The Nutiva Hemp oil is cold-pressed from raw shelled hemp seed. It also contains the ingredients such an Omega-3, Omega-6, and GLA/SDA fatty acids.
The CBD tinctures of liquids are made by diluting the pure hemp CBD oil with other natural oil bases. A small serving of CBD consist of 1-20 mg per serving which is sufficient for most of the people, but you can increase the amount if required without any side effect.
You can also hemp extracts to your pets. Many users have reported the use of Santa Cruz Botanicals 300mg Hemp Extract Drops for Pets to reduce anxiety, fear, pawning and nervousness in pets
The hemp oil capsules are convenient and easy to take your dose of CBD. The one benefit of CBD capsules over regular CBD oil is that it has longer shelf life than hemp oil. It can also be used while traveling without worrying about spilling it. Manitoba Harvest Hemp Oil comes in the capsule which you can easily order online.
In the market, there are several CBD oil based creams and lotions which can be applied directly to the skin, including joints, face, and inflammatory areas. Many people have used it as a balm when having a migraine or a headache and found to be useful.
Increme is a product which comes in a creme and has found to be helpful in using when having back pains, migraine and minor relief from the symptoms of arthritis.
Is it legal to buy CBD Oil?
There is no official legal status of CBD oil as it varies based on the country and the laws of the land. Here is a typical legal status of CBD oil in various countries.
The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had issues directive which made CBD oil to be illegal in the United States.
As per Federal Register (Dec 14, 2016) issuance, it contains a section that established new drug code for “marijuana extract.” DEA lists cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug, and it says, all CBD oil, regardless of whether it is derived from CBD-rich marijuana or industrial hemp, is illegal in the U.S.
The DEA’s position is that all extracts that contain CBD will also contain traces of other cannabinoids and even if it was possible to extract CBD alone then it will fall within new drug code and will remain illegal.
The same rule goes to the CBD derived from hemp as any extract derived from any plant of genus Cannabis and which contain cannabinol and cannabidiols will be illegal.
However, Congress has passed the 2014 farm bill which allowed the certain states to grow hemp but with this new ruling DEA’s position is that you can grow hemp, but if you extract CBD oil from it then it becomes illegal.
It is legal in the UK to purchase CBD after much of the medical and political debate there. A Kent and London-based company called UK CBD has become the first manufacturer to sell CBD in the UK.
The Supreme Court of Canada has struck down a previous regulation which made access to medical marijuana as illegal. The supreme court has said that cannabis oils, as well as fresh marijuana buds and leaves, can now be sold by licensed producers provided they follow similar packaging and labeling requirements as exist for dried marijuana.
This new rule now allows licensed producers to sell cannabis oil or fresh leaves or bud, but they can’t turn into other products. CBD oil does fall as legal to be sold in Canada under a watchful eye of Health Canada.
Vancouver has become the first Canadian municipality to allow opening of marijuana dispensaries, requiring operators to pay a $30,000 licensing fee and be at least 300 meters away from the community centers and school.
Australia still makes Cannabis use and possession to be illegal, but New South Wales and Victoria are contemplating to allow a clinical trial of the medical use of Cannabis.
Although Australia makes the cannabis to be illegal for recreational purposes, it has decriminalized for personal consumption in the small amount for Australian Capital Territory, South Australia, and Northern Territory.
In Germany the possession of Cannabis for recreational purposes is illegal but on may 4, 2016 the cabinet of Germany approved the prescription of legal Cannabis for severely ill patients.
How to Buy CBD Oil
Once you have determined the legality of buying the CBD at your place, you should choose organic CBD oil whenever you can.
Buying organic CBD will assure that it is free from pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and other synthetic chemicals used to grow the cannabis. CBD oil comes mixed with other oils, you have to make sure the labelling tells you exactly how much ratio of CBD is present in the oil mixture.
If you live in part of the country where you can buy it from regulated manufacturer such as approved dispensaries then you should try to get it from there first.
It might be little more expensive than purchasing through untrusted source but you will not have desirable effect if the CBD oil you are buying is heavily diluted.
How to use CBD Oil
CBD oil can be either taken orally or transdermally. It is always good idea to start with a small dose. Typically many people start with three drops three times a day at first. You can place these CBD drops either under your tongue or you can put in your salad dressing.

A research on CBD oil have not shown any harmful side affects yet, so it might be safe to use but if you should consult your doctor if you are on blood thinning medication since CBD oil can inhibit clotting.
Our Recommendation on CBD oil for Fibromyalgia
Researchers have found that CBD oil to be helpful in relieving pain and other symptoms in fibromyalgia patients. CBD oil found to be safe in use and no harmful side effect has been noticed.
But as of right now, there is very limited research conducted to find any definite correlation between CBD and fibromyalgia. CBD comes in several different forms ranging from oil to capsule, and even CBD vape oil are used for pain.
Many people who suffered from fibromyalgia has taken CBD oils and have claimed to be greatly relieved from the pain. The effect of CBD oil is quick, and typically patients have seen a reduction in pain within 24 hours.
You have to pay careful attention to the source you are buying from as there has been so many instances where many sellers sold CBD oil which had no CBD oil in it.
